Ozempic
What is Ozempic?
Ozempic is a brand-name, FDA-approved prescription medicine whose active ingredient is semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist. Ozempic is FDA-approved to treat type 2 diabetes (and to reduce certain cardiovascular risks in adults with type 2 diabetes and known heart disease). It is sometimes prescribed "off-label" by providers for other purposes; weight management is not an FDA-approved use of Ozempic.
How does it work?
Ozempic mimics the GLP-1 hormone — helping the pancreas release insulin when blood sugar is elevated, slowing digestion, and affecting appetite signals.
How is it taken?
Ozempic is a once-weekly injection under the skin, with the dose increased gradually as directed by your provider.
Possible side effects
Common side effects are digestive: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and constipation. More serious reported risks include pancreatitis, gallbladder problems, kidney problems, low blood sugar (especially with insulin or sulfonylureas), and allergic reactions. Important safety information — possible thyroid tumors
In animal studies, this class of medication caused thyroid C-cell tumors. It is not known whether it causes thyroid tumors, including medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), in people. Do not use this medication if you or a family member has a history of MTC or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2). Tell your provider about all your medical conditions before starting.
