Wegovy
What is Wegovy?
Wegovy is a brand-name, FDA-approved prescription medicine whose active ingredient is semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist. Wegovy is approved for chronic weight management in eligible adults and, per updated labeling, additional uses such as cardiovascular risk reduction.
How does it work?
Like other GLP-1 medications, Wegovy mimics the GLP-1 hormone — supporting insulin release when blood sugar is high, slowing stomach emptying, and acting on appetite centers in the brain to increase fullness and reduce hunger.
How is it taken?
Wegovy is given as a once-weekly injection under the skin. The dose is started low and increased in steps over several weeks, as directed by your provider.
Possible side effects
Common side effects are primarily digestive: nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, and abdominal pain. More serious risks reported with this class include pancreatitis, gallbladder problems, kidney problems, low blood sugar, and allergic reactions. Important safety information — possible thyroid tumors
In animal studies, this class of medication caused thyroid C-cell tumors. It is not known whether it causes thyroid tumors, including medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), in people. Do not use this medication if you or a family member has a history of MTC or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2).
