Zepbound
What is Zepbound?
Zepbound is a brand-name, FDA-approved prescription medicine whose active ingredient is tirzepatide, a dual GIP/GLP-1 receptor agonist. Zepbound is approved for chronic weight management in eligible adults.
How does it work?
Zepbound activates two gut-hormone pathways (GIP and GLP-1) — supporting insulin release in response to food, slowing stomach emptying, and reducing appetite while increasing fullness.
How is it taken?
Zepbound is a once-weekly injection under the skin. The dose is started low and increased in steps over time, as directed by your provider.
Possible side effects
Common side effects are digestive: nausea, diarrhea, constipation, vomiting, and abdominal pain. More serious reported risks include pancreatitis, gallbladder problems, kidney problems, low blood sugar, and allergic reactions. Important safety information — possible thyroid tumors
In animal studies, this class of medication caused thyroid C-cell tumors. It is not known whether it causes thyroid tumors, including medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), in people. Do not use this medication if you or a family member has a history of MTC or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2). Tell your provider about all your medical conditions before starting.
